introduction

The Midnapore Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital was established in the year 1945, on 3rd Dec, the auspicious birthday of Sahid Kshudiram, the first sacrificed soul of Indian Freedom Movement. It is the 2nd oldest Homoeopathic Medical College in India, which is situated on the bank of river Kansaboti in the Marty's land Midnapore Town of Paschim Medinipur, the historic district of West Bengal.

This District is hallowed by association with great heart Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar, the outstanding Scholar, Social reformar (who introduce Homoeopathy in the district as early as 1863) Rishi Raj Narayan Bose, the maternal Grandfather of Sri Aurobina, Kshudiram Bose, the selfless and fearless Martyr and a host of celebrated persons who helped to put the name of Midnapore in the Political, Social and Educational map of India. Sahid Matangini Hazra, Birendranath Sasmal, Ajoy Mukherjee are famous name of Midnapore District. Another one is Satish Samanta who brought the Homoeopathy Bill in the perliament, is also from this district.

Some Philanthropic Personalities like Dr. B. K. Sarkar, the eminent Homoeopath, Gold medalist and author of "Organon of Medicine" who had been appointed the chairman of all the committees during the growing and developmental period of Homoeopathy in 1970's decade, and also the ex-principal of this institution. Dr. Bankim Behary Choudhury, the founder, first principal and secretary of this institution, Raybahadhur Debendra Mohan Bhattacharya, Atul Chandra Bose and Rai Saheb Pravat Chandra Dutta started a charitable dispensary in 1945 on a rented house at Colonegola area of Midnapore town which formed the nucleus of this institution. Dr. D.N. Sinha and Dr. B.B. Saha both are the ex-principal of this institution & the eminent physician of modern medicine of the town dtudied Homoeopathy and worked hard for the development of the Institution. Dr. J.N. Maity, Dr. B.K. Jana, Dr. B.N. Santra & Dr. N.R. Chakraborty are also combinedly worked for the name and fame of the Institution.

The College section of this Institution started to run in 1946 at Midnapore College & Collegiate School Building and received affiliation of the council of Homoeopathic Medicine of West Bwngal to run the D.M.S. course in 1947.

On the recommendation of the ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India and on initiation of Mr. Amiya Kr. Kisku, the then Deputy Health Minister of the central Govt., five Homoeopathic Medical Colleges including this college were up-graded by the Govt. of West Bengal in 1973 for the Diploma Course. In 1975-76 the Institution was affiliated to the University of Calcutta and MBS/BMS/BHMS Degree course was introduced and since then admission of diploma course was stopped and first batch of the students Graduated in 1982.

The College, Boy's Hostel, Girl's Hostel, OPD & IPD Building all are situated in about 10 Acras of won land. The present Hospital building was inagurated by Hon'ble Mr. K. N. Katju, the then Governor of West Bengal in 1950. The Hospital is running with 50 Indoor Beds, X-rays, Pathological laboratories, well equipped Operation Theater and outdoor departments for suffering humanity of this District, neighbouring District and also states like Bihar, Orrisa &Jharkhand etc. The new building of the college section was inaugurated by the then Health Minister Mr. Ajit Kumar Panja on 27th January, 1977.

Drug Proving Research Unit

The Institution had a Drug Proving Research Unit under Central Council of research in Homoeopathy in India (CCRIH) since 1957 and proved 35 drugs. Presently, the Drug Proving Research Unit is shifted from the urban district to greater Kolkata as per order of the (CCRIH) without informing anything to the institution.
